Philippines is located in the pacific.

For those who don’t know, Philippines is a group of islands so the places are prone to typhoon throughout the year. 

What do people do to get ready for rainy season?

Maybe 40% of the population in the Philippines do not need to worry about typhoon season.

Their houses are built for extreme conditions.

雨季に合わせてどんな準備をすると思いますか？

フィリピンの人口の約40％くらいは良い条件でおうちが建てられているから、台風シーズンを心配する必要がありません。

However, 60% of the population need to double prepare for the rainy days.

It’s kind of funny.

We prepare buckets of water and lots of floor towels.

People check for roof durability to make sure it won’t get blown by the wind. 

There might be power and water outage which last for dayssssss…

We only have dry and wet season so people do not have heater inside houses.

In the Philippines, air conditioner or “Aircon” is only used to make the room cold.

Without Aircon, it’s going to be super duper hot.

Fact: Low income household do not have Aircon.

Electricity is expensive in the Philippines.

フィリピンは雨季と乾季しかないから、ヒーターなんてものは家に置いてなくて。

エアコンも部屋を涼しくするためだけ。

エアコンがなかったらめちゃくちゃ暑くなっちゃうからね。

Houses have different designs. Modern Philippines do not have specific house design. It really depends on the owner what they want but balcony is a big thing.

家はいろんなデザインで建てられています。現代のフィリピンは具体的なハウス設計がないの。建てる人がどんなふうに望んでいるかに寄るけれど、バルコニーは結構重要。

Old people like to hang out in the balcony to drink coffee and observe other people.

Sometimes we joke about them as human CCTV.

It’s not the same as Japan where people like to do something even in old age.

たまには監視カメラとか見てジョークを言ったり。
お年寄りはバルコニーに出てコーヒーを飲んだり、人間観察をするのが好きなんです。
年配者でも、日本みたいに何かをしているのが好きな国ではないんですね。

We have Spain influence, too.

Houses in the Philippines have different designs but the traditional houses can be seen in provinces or in old cities in Manila.

Old cities have almost same style as cities in Spain because Spain came to our country years ago.

If you visit the Philippines, you will see a lot of differences we have.

It is a whole new world.
